COMPARACION DEL UROCULTIVO CUANTITATIVO Y EL ANTIBIOGRAMA DE ENTEROBACTERIAS PROCESADOS EN 24 Y 72 HORAS
COMPARISON OF QUANTITATIVE URINE CULTURE AND ENTEROBACTERIA ANTIBIOGRAM PROCESSED IN 24 AND 72 HOURS

SUMMARY: Urinary tract infections, one of the most common infectious diseases, particularly among women, require prompt diagnosis and specific antimicrobial treatment. Standard diagnostic procedures, including urine culture and antibiograms, typically require 72 hours. However, macroscopic bacterial growth has been observed within shorter time frames in laboratory practice. This study aimed to determine whether a 24-hour processing approach maintains the same diagnostic sensitivity as the 72-hour standard.
A total of 177 urine culture samples were analyzed. Samples with pathological sediments (leukocytes and bacteria) were included, while those growing fungi or non-Enterobacteriaceae microorganisms were excluded.
Results showed 74.58% positive and 25.42% negative cultures, identical findings at 24 and 72 hours. The identified bacteria were Escherichia coli (63.84%), Klebsiella sp. (10.17%), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (0.56%). Antibiograms revealed similar sensitivities at both time points: Nitrofurantoin, Ceftriaxone, and Imipenem were the most effective for E. coli and Klebsiella sp., while P. aeruginosa was only sensitive to Imipenem.
Conclusion: Urine cultures processed at 24 hours for Enterobacteriaceae demonstrate the same diagnostic sensitivity as the 72-hour standard, including biochemical identification and antibiogram results.
Key word: Urine culture, enterobacteria, antibiogram.
