ABSTRACT: The widespread use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) among university students presents significant educational challenges. When used spontaneously during learning, it may hinder the development of independent reasoning and foster cognitive dependency.
This study offers a critical review of the use of generative AI in university-level mathematics education, evaluating its benefits and risks. Twenty-two studies published between 2023 and 2025 were analyzed, encompassing diverse methodological approaches and sourced from databases such as Scopus, ScienceDirect, IEEE Xplore, and Google Scholar.
Findings indicate that, when strategically mediated by educators, generative AI can personalize learning, enhance problem-solving skills, and foster student engagement. However, uncritical use may weaken self-regulation and compromise the reliability of the learning process.
The study concludes that effective integration of generative AI requires pedagogical leadership, updated theoretical frameworks, and institutional support through clear policies and professional development programs that ensure ethical and informed use in the classroom.
Keywords: Generative artificial intelligence, university mathematics, teaching and learning, personalization, problem solving, immediate feedback, strategic mediation, intellectual autonomy.
