ABSTRACT: This study examines the impact of the digital audio workstation (DAW) REAPER on the piano skill development of a visually impaired student at Universidad Nacional de San Agustín, Arequipa. It is an applied, descriptive, exploratory study with a non-experimental design and mixed-methods approach, conducted as a single-case study between 2020 and 2021.
Instruments included the Music Skills Rubric (Lopera, s.f.), a self-assessment questionnaire on REAPER (Galván, 2021), and a semi-structured interview. Data analysis combined quantitative data from grades and questionnaires with qualitative categories from interviews and observations.
Findings indicate that integrating REAPER, along with the accessibility extensions OSARA and screen reader NVDA, significantly enhanced the student’s pianistic development, strengthening technique, interpretive fluency, and autonomy in independent practice.
It is concluded that accessible DAWs can act as pedagogical mediators in inclusive music education, providing initial evidence of their replicability in other instruments and higher education contexts.
Keywords: REAPER, accessibility, visual impairment, piano teaching, inclusive education, music technology.
